Story
After the Great Kanto Earthquake, Kudan House was built so that it might withstand whatever crisis lay ahead.
That was the wish placed within it. Given a resilient structure, the house remained standing through later earthquakes, war, reconstruction, and the transformation of the city, until it reached the night of its hundredth year.
And in every era, there was a table within this house.
One day in its hundredth year, an invitation arrives.
“You are invited to the Centennial Banquet.”
Two figures await you inside.
One is Attendant, who receives the voices of a century and carries the dishes, yet has never once had a dish meant for them.
The other is Guide, who knows the passage of time through the fifth dish, but not what lies beyond.
Six dishes are meant to be served tonight.
The final dish has not been forgotten.
It does not yet exist within the memory of this house.
Then six figures from different eras appear within the house.
Architect, who sought to protect lives and the places people could return to through structures that would not fall.
Poet, who left behind a life assigned to them and sought to live in their own name and words.
Exile, driven from their homeland, who sought a place to belong, free from domination.
Performer, who carried sorrow yet sought, in any circumstance, to create joy with others.
Novelist, who sought to preserve in words, before it vanished, the moment beauty moved the heart.
Artist, who entrusted to colour and form the truth that their connection to the world had not disappeared.
None of the six can be contained within the single image history has preserved of them. Each is a human being who carries both longing and contradiction. The wish each refused to relinquish to the very end sustained someone—and that same wish also bound someone else.
You will walk beside one of the six and witness encounters and crossings that never took place in history. Each time the voice at your ear converges with the body before your eyes, a single scene takes on a different meaning.
In time, through the encounters and choices of that day, the sixth dish—the one absent from memory—takes on meaning for the first time.
For whom will that dish be served?
When the Centennial Banquet comes to an end, the question returns—not to a future still unknown, but to your own life.
Character
Kudan | One Who Knows the Future
The host of the centennial banquet at Kudan House. Knowing what lies ahead, Kudan welcomes guests in a gentle voice and guides them into the memories of six people from across time. There is no hesitation in their words; even the smallest gesture reveals feelings left unspoken. When guests lift food to their lips, Kudan falls silent and waits until they have finished savoring it. Time spent with a dish is treated with the same care as time spent touching another person’s life. An approachable manner, a gaze that seems to see through everything. Beneath that assured guidance lies a presence somehow removed from the human world.

Iori | One Who Receives the Voices of a Century
The server who prepares the banquet table and carries dishes holding the memories that linger in Kudan House. Without speaking, Iori welcomes guests through an outstretched hand or a glance. They adjust a plate, draw back a chair, and attend to each person’s comfort. Someone eats, laughs, then suddenly grows quiet. Iori quietly notices even these small changes. After setting down a dish, they linger, watching a guest’s face as they savor the first bite. When something catches a guest’s eye, Iori follows their gaze. The movements of serving are seamless, yet the eyes studying each expression hold the curiosity of someone encountering it for the first time.

The Architect | One Who Sustains Human Life Across Time
An architect specializing in the structures that hold buildings up. The sight of people losing their homes in an earthquake remains etched in the architect’s memory, sustaining a lifelong concern with architecture that protects human life. Faced with a drawing, they cannot help examining what each line supports until they are satisfied. If they notice a guest is cold, they pause their work and offer a cloth for warmth. Beyond the precise calculations, they envision a place where someone can rest safely and go about their everyday life. The figure calls to mind the architect who designed the structural frameworks of a mansion in Kudan and a broadcasting tower rising above the city.

The Poet | One Who Opens Her Own Path Through Words
A poet who has entrusted her innermost feelings to verse. In a world where the family name and the wishes of others carry great weight, she knows how difficult it can be to voice her own desires. Beneath her courteous manner lies a fierce wish to decide for herself whom to live with, and how. Seasonal flowers and small sweets move her, and she treasures the time spent sharing their beauty with someone else. Her words call to mind a woman who married from an aristocratic family into a household in Kyushu, and gave voice in her poetry to the desire to love and live freely.

The Exile | One Who Seeks to Reclaim His Homeland’s Future
An exile who crossed the sea to escape his pursuers in the struggle for his homeland’s independence. Even far away, he longs for the day when the people back home can decide for themselves how to live. As he listens for footsteps outside, a parcel of spices rests among his belongings. He grinds them and brews chai, releasing a familiar fragrance. The sharpness of a sip and the warmth that lingers in his body restore a sense of being alive to a man who has been holding his breath in hiding. The figure calls to mind an exile who traveled from India to Japan in pursuit of his country’s independence, bringing with him the curry of his homeland.

The Performer | One Who Makes the Joy of Living Resonate
A performer who longs to captivate people through song, dance, and acting. The mere thought of the stages and cities she dreams of sets her body in motion. When she tastes something delicious, she wants to share the pleasure with the person beside her. If one person in the audience smiles, she wants to make another smile too. Their responses give rise to her next step, her next note. She herself delights in anticipating the moment when someone before her is moved. Her song and dance call to mind a performer who filled the streets of postwar Japan with the rhythms of boogie and swept audiences into exuberance.

The Novelist | One Who Seeks to Hold Fleeting Beauty Forever
A novelist who discovers in dimness a beauty overlooked in brighter places. Gold emerging from black lacquer; a shadow passing across a face. The slightest change in light gives something familiar a different expression. The novelist catches these moments and wants to share them with the person nearby. Even when raising a cup to their lips, they seek to savor the vessel’s shadows and the faint light on the surface of the water. The desire to preserve beauty in words is powerful, and even desires that others cannot understand hold an allure they cannot resist writing about. This gaze calls to mind a novelist who found beauty in lacquerware and the dark interiors of Japanese houses, and wrote an essay on the allure of shadows.

The Artist | One Who Reimagines the World Through Her Own Eyes
An artist who has worked in oils and now, in a room where she is convalescing, cuts colored paper in search of new forms. She chooses a sheet of blue, cuts it, and places it before her. A slight change in angle reveals an unexpected shape. Stirred by the discovery, she reaches for the next piece. She wants to explore and express, with her own hands, what she sees and what arises in her mind. Slowly savoring a mouthful and attending to her own sensations echoes the way she explores the world through color and form in her art. Her hands call to mind a painter who created a cover for a women’s literary magazine and made vivid paper pictures during her years of convalescence.
